While medical doctor always ranks among the most prestigious careers in the United States, becoming a veterinarian is no minor feat. Sure, the curriculum at veterinary colleges can be challenging, but gaining entrance to veterinary technology colleges might be equally difficult. Some might find it surprising that there are only 28 veterinary colleges in the United States; and with so few seats available each year, gaining admission at any veterinary technology college is highly competitive.
Since there are 141 American colleges and universities with the authority to grant medical doctor degrees, one of the foremost goals of the typical medical school applicant is to get into the most prestigious program as possible. On the other hand, given the fact that there are so few veterinary programs in the United States, the goal of getting into a good veterinary college is less important than being offered admission to any veterinary program, period. While there are undeniable differences between good veterinary colleges and mediocre ones, gaining admission to any of the 28 programs nationwide should be considered an accomplishment.
Unfortunately, the lack of program space means hundreds of fine veterinary school applicants are denied admission each year. But this does not mean that they have to settle for another career, or applying to veterinary assistant colleges; some might consider improving their chances by applying to Canadian veterinary programs, such as Ontario Veterinary College.
Although the programs are equally rigorous, and the applicant pool highly competitive, there are five veterinary technology colleges in Canada. However, if an applicant has a strong enough passion for becoming a veterinarian, it is well worth looking into. After all applicants would be adding five additional choices to their program lists. Additionally, by looking over the border, an applicant just might find that one program that seems tailor made for him or her.
